It is with great sadness that we report the passing of veteran John Dennett Leg d’Hon, who passed away in hospital on Sunday 22 March aged 101. John served in the Royal Navy on landing crafts during World War 2 and took part in actions in the Mediterranean and D Day. He was a man of great character and became well known following a number of TV interview and newspaper articles. John was one of a small number of Normandy veterans who were photographed as part of a national exhibition by Matt Sills. It was during that photo session that John coined the phrase “the lucky ones grow old” which became the title for the exhibition itself. John returned to Normandy on numerous occasions to honour those who were not so lucky and never returned home from that conflict. Our condolences go to all of John’s family at this time of their loss.
