Spirit of Normandy Trust Reunion receives funding award

We have been very fortunate to have been awarded a grant to help fund the planned veterans reunion in September. The Veterans Foundation has very kindly and generously awarded 7,120.00 towards the cost of staging the reunion, ensuring that Normandy Veterans will not be asked to pay for any part of their weekend in Portsmouth.

Make sure that you have the weekend of 6th to 8th September in your diary. Now that the Normandy commemorations are behind us we will be undertaking detailed planning for the weekend, so watch this space.

Our sincere thanks go to the Veterans Foundation for their generous award.

Westbourne Post Office Fund Raising

Westbourne Post Office in Bournemouth set about raising funds for the Spirit of Normandy Trust. An exhibition was set up in the public space of the post office and a range of fund raising activities undertaken including a very popular cake stall. As a result, the Post Office Staff raised 1,700.00 for the Trust. A cheque presentation was held at the Post Office on 22 June. This was an outstanding local initiative which will help the Trust undertake its important work with the veterans of the Normandy Landings

Stockport Normandy Veterans Legacy

Spirit of Normandy Chairman, Richard Palusinski, attended the launch event of Stockport Normandy Veterans Legacy, which was held in the Ballroom of Stockport Town Hall on Thursday 20 June. The organisers engaged with local schools and encouraged them to study aspects of the Second World War, including the Normandy Landings. A large number of schools were involved and all exhibited their work at the event. The children were enthusiastic and had really taken an interest in the subject. A group of schoolchildren dressed as evacuees sang wartime songs. A great deal of effort had gone into the launch and the event. Linda Varley, the Administrator for the project, was delighted with the response and looks forward to the next steps.

Sheffield Drumhead Service

Representatives from the Spirit of Normandy Trust attended a formal dinner at the Cutlers Hall, Sheffield on Friday 14th June at the kind invitation of the Master Cutler. The following day a Drumhead Service and a flypast by a Lancaster was held at the Norfolk Heritage Park. Trust Vice Chairman, Ian Steward, laid a wreath on behalf of Canada. The events were arranged by Graham Askham and Philip Skinner and were a great success.
